It was just reported that 81-year-old comedian and E! Networks host of Fashion Patrol Joan Rivers is currently in critical condition in a New York City hospital. While undergoing throat surgery, the controversial figure reportedly stopped breathing. While in recovery, police were dispatched to an emergency call at the clinic where Rivers was found to be in dire condition.
Rivers has always been known for her wit, also sharp-edged tongue, and willingness to delve into topics that all others avoid. Rivers and her daughter, Melissa who often co-stars on the E! Network show, have remained close friends so it came as no surprise when she, as well as her 13-year-old son, took the earliest flight out to be near Joan’s side.
Just one day prior to the incident, Rivers attended a New York event to promote her new book. Witnesses at the event said she looked healthy and was in great spirits. Apparently, she was more than happy to snap photos with people, all the while telling jokes. As one person said, Rivers was “as sharp as she’s ever been”.
While no one knows what type of throat surgery Rivers underwent at Yorkville Endoscopy in New York, it did not appear to be anything serious as little was said prior to her going to the clinic. However, according to local police, during the procedure she suddenly stopped breathing. After receiving a 911 call that someone was in respiratory or cardiac arrest, Rivers was rushed to Mount Sanai Hospital.
Joan Rivers made her television debut in 1965 after appearing as a guest on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show”. She made such an impression that her career as a bona fide comedian was born. During her career, she went on to perform throughout the country but in most recent years, she hosted Fashion Police, covering red carpet events such as the Emmys and Video Music Awards, among others.
Rivers had been following a very hectic schedule in the past several months, especially for someone of her age. Although not everyone agrees with the topics or people she pokes fun at, she has become a mainstay in millions of homes around the country. At this point, the only thing the public knows is that Rivers is in critical condition but as far as prognosis, the remains to be seen.
